The Truth About Water-Damaged Phones

Water damage is one of the most misunderstood problems we see at TechFix. People bring in phones that were dropped in sinks, toilets, pools, rain, and even washing machines — usually after trying “rice” first.

Let’s talk about what really happens inside a water-damaged phone and what you should (and shouldn’t) do.

💧 What Water Actually Does Inside Your Phone

Modern phones are packed with:

  • Tiny components
  • High-density chips
  • Fine-pitch connectors
  • Delicate traces and pads

When water gets in, it brings minerals and contaminants that start a chemical reaction — corrosion.

Even if the phone still works right after, the damage is often just beginning.

🍚 The Rice Myth

Rice is one of the worst “fixes” for water damage.

  • It does not remove corrosion
  • It does not clean under chips or connectors
  • It can waste the critical early hours when proper cleaning is needed

At best, rice absorbs some surface moisture. At worst, it gives a false sense of security.

⚠️ What Not to Do After Water Damage

  • Do not keep turning the phone on “to check it”
  • Do not plug it in to charge
  • Do not heat it in an oven or with a hair dryer
  • Do not shake or slam it to get the water out

All of these can make the damage much worse.

✅ What You Should Do Instead

  • Turn the phone off immediately
  • If possible, remove the SIM card
  • Wipe the outside dry
  • Bring it to TechFix as soon as you can

The sooner we can open it and clean it, the better the chances.
