Why Your Phone Is Overheating and How to Fix It

If your phone feels hot to the touch, slows down, or shows a “temperature” warning, it’s trying to tell you something.

At TechFix, we see overheating issues on iPhones, Samsung, and other devices all the time. Sometimes it’s normal behavior — other times it’s a sign of a deeper problem.

🔥 Normal vs. Not-Normal Heat

It’s normal for a phone to get warm when:

  • Charging from a very low battery
  • Running GPS or navigation
  • Playing 3D games or using the camera for a long time
  • Installing large updates

It’s not normal when the phone:

  • Stays hot even when idle
  • Overheats on basic tasks
  • Shows frequent temperature warnings
  • Shuts down due to heat

🔋 Battery-Related Overheating

A failing battery can create a lot of heat, especially when:

  • Charging and using the phone at the same time
  • The battery is old and worn out
  • The battery is swollen or damaged

Replacing the battery often solves random overheating on older devices.

⚡ Charging Habits & Cables

Cheap or damaged chargers can cause:

  • Uneven power delivery
  • Hot charging ports
  • Excess stress on the power system

Using quality chargers and not gaming heavily while charging can reduce heat.

🧠 CPU, Apps & Background Processes

Some apps constantly push the CPU and GPU, such as:

  • Games
  • Streaming apps
  • Navigation
  • Social apps refreshing constantly

Closing unnecessary apps, disabling background refresh, and reducing screen brightness can help.

🧩 Hardware Faults & Shorts

Sometimes overheating is a sign of a deeper board-level issue:

  • Shorted components
  • PMIC faults
  • Charging IC problems
  • Water damage causing partial shorts

These require real diagnostics with thermal cameras, multimeters, and microscope inspection — exactly what TechFix uses in the shop.
