The Truth About Aftermarket Screens — What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we get at TechFix is:

“Are aftermarket screens good?”

The short answer: they can be good, but it depends on which type you get.

Not all screens are created equal. Between OEM, soft OLED, hard OLED, and cheap TFT screens, the quality difference is huge — and it's important to know what you’re paying for.

📱 OEM Screens (Original Screens)

OEM screens are made by the original manufacturer (Samsung, LG, BOE, Sharp, etc.). These are the highest quality screens available.

Pros:
  • Best brightness and color accuracy
  • Perfect touch response
  • Highest durability
  • Lowest battery consumption
Cons:
  • More expensive

If you want your phone to look and feel brand new, OEM is always the best choice.

🟢 Soft OLED Screens (Premium Aftermarket)

Soft OLED is the best aftermarket option for many iPhones. It uses flexible OLED material similar to OEM screens.

Pros:
  • Bright colors
  • Thin and lightweight
  • Good touch sensitivity
Cons:
  • Slightly less bright than OEM
  • Higher cost than budget screens

🟡 Hard OLED Screens (Mid-Grade Aftermarket)

Hard OLED uses glass backing instead of flexible material. It is cheaper to manufacture but easier to crack.

Pros:
  • Better than LCD/TFT
  • Good overall performance
Cons:
  • More fragile than soft OLED
  • Slightly dimmer display

🔴 TFT LCD Screens (Budget Screens)

This is the lowest-quality replacement screen.

Cons:
  • Very dim
  • Muted colors
  • Slower touch response
  • High battery consumption
  • Thicker and heavier
  • Often causes ghost touches

TFT screens are cheap — but you get what you pay for.

⚠️ Common Aftermarket Screen Problems

  • Lower brightness
  • Off-color display (blue/green tint)
  • Ghost touches or missed touches
  • Screen randomly stops responding
  • High battery drain
  • Poor visibility in sunlight
  • Faster cracking due to hard glass layers

🛠 Why Some Shops Only Use Cheap Screens

Some repair shops use the cheapest screens available to maximize profit. The customer pays the price with:

  • Shorter screen lifespan
  • Touch issues
  • Poor display quality
  • More returns & frustration
